Malting barley and mixed farming
The coastal plain of Moray has some of the most reliable growing conditions in the north, and much of the barley grown here is destined for malting and distilling on Speyside. Inland and towards Banff the pattern turns to mixed farming, with suckler herds, finishing cattle, sheep on higher ground and a number of intensive pig and poultry sites.
Buildings and ground
Barley needs careful storage, so many farms have large grain stores with drying floors and aeration fans under broad steel roofs. These are strong candidates for roof-mounted panels. Coastal sites see stronger winds, so mounting and fixings are specified for the exposure. Field margins close to an existing supply point can suit a ground-mount array.
Connecting to the SSEN network
Moray and Banffshire are covered by SSEN Distribution. We check local capacity before you commit and design an export-limited system where the line is busy.
Where the power goes
Store aeration, dryer fans, conveyors and livestock ventilation are the usual daytime loads. Workshops and farm offices add to the baseline.
Pig and poultry units in the area have ventilation and heating controls that run all year, giving a reliable base load. Combined with grain store fans after harvest, this means a well-sized array can find a use on site for most of the electricity it produces.
